Winchester Cathedral - Art treasure
Winchester Cathedral is just a few minutes walk from Wolvesey View B&B, at the other end of Colebrook Street. The churchyard there was known as ‘Paradise’
The cathedral, built shortly after the Norman conquest, is enormous and spectacularly beautiful. No visitor should miss it and the best way to visit is on one of the many guided tours.
Inside are art treasures, fine memorials in wood, stone and glass, and incomparable history from royal Saxon bones to the tomb of Jane Austen and the story of the diver who saved the cathedral a century ago.
In the weeks before Christmas the Close becomes home to one of the best Christmas fairs in the UK. A regular part of the attraction is an ice skating rink. In summer there’s an outstanding flower festival, and around the cathedral in early July mad-cap entertainment can be enjoyed during the Winchester Hat Fair. Each year there are wonderful concerts and of course every day inspiring services with perfect choir and organ music.
Outside the west door is a very good souvenir shop and large restaurant/canteen.
