Green City - parks and trees
Seen from the hills around it Winchester looks like a city of trees. Colebrook Street with its gardens is glorious from spring on. Fine trees around the cathedral provide a great setting for the magnificent medieval church.
Very close to the city bridge is a small but dramatic wooded hill, St Giles Hill with a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the main street and the town centre.
Beside the Itchen and in the Abbey Gardens there are fine weeping willows, while in the Riverside Park an avenue of trees show the glory of the changing seasons.
St Catherines Hill a mile or so down the valley is crowned with an impressive ring of tall beech trees and makes an exhilerating walk at any time of year with a panoramic views north and south and an intriguing maze cut into the downland turf.
